Formerly the capital of the Kingdom of León, it gave its name to the Community. The city's most famous monuments are its great Gothic cathedral, the church Basilica de San Isidoro with valuable Romanesque frescoes, and the San Marcos church of the Renaissance period. Close to Leon you may visit the legendary Roman gold mines Las Medulas.
The second essential cathedral when it comes to discovering the beauty of Gothic architecture in this part of Spain is the Cathedral of Leon. Here, what you will find most amazing is the light that floods into the building through its 737 stained glass windows. Two recommendations: don’t miss its spectacular rose window, its choir stalls (some of the oldest in Spain) and its famous, delicate statue known as the Virgen Blanca.
Dotted around these streets are bars and restaurants where we can sample the best of the region's gastronomy and which have made it worthy of the nickname El Húmedo. We can continue our route on to the Palace of los Guzmanes and the Casa de los Botines.
