Granada is one of the pearls of Spain, most visited by tourists from all over the world with the world-famous "Alhambra" at the top of the list. An impressive Andalusian legacy meets architectural gems from the Renaissance and the most modern facilities, typical of the 21st century. Because it was the last city reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, Granada has an unmistakable Arab flavour.
Walk through beautiful gardens, charming narrow streets filled with flowers, sit down in one of those typical taverns to have some of that famous "Trevélez" ham and local wine, and breath the centuries of history around you anywhere. There are gypsies singing "Flamenco", caves - in the mountain of the monastery of Sacromonte, and don't miss to visit Granada's popular festivals, based as well on Moorish as Christian tradition. The city is located at the foot of the "Sierra Nevada", Spain's highest mountain-massif with great possibilities for winter-sports. The highest peak, "Mulhacén" arrives to 3478 meters. On the other hand it is not far from the Mediterranean sea, so Granada is a great place to visit in any season.
Granada's geographic location, between the mountains and the sea, explains its rich and varied kitchen: the reputed Jamón de Trevelez, a ham that is cured in the snow from the high mountain, a well-known Migas Alpujarreñas, made of fried pieces of bread. Originally from the town itself are Tortilla al Sacromonte, the local version of the "spanish omelette", Habas Fritas con Jamon, fried beans with cured ham, and Pollo al Ajillo, chicken with garlic. The desserts are mostly of Moorish tradition, often made of almonds and honey, like Torta Real and Pestiños. However do not miss to visit one of the famous "tapas bars" where you can enjoy some of local dishes free with the asked drink.
